The car park at the Pirelli factory sits close to Crayford Marshes, an important site for wildlife. Staff at Pirelli working with Groundwork were concerned that run-off from the car park would have an adverse impact on biodiversity.
The solution? A sustainable urban drainage subsystem (SUDS) that utilised a detention pond and reedbeds. The reedbed was planted to border the car park, thus the runoff from the hard surface runs flows through the reedbeds and is cleaned by them, so that when this runoff eventually flows into the adjacent Erith marshes, it meets the appropriate water quality standards.
