From the earliest public consultations conducted by the Mile End Park Community Liaison Team, one of the greatest problems identified with the Park was its fragmentation. A number of major and minor roads and railway viaducts dissected the Park into a series of small areas. In this way, for many people the whole area was not really perceived as one complete Park.
Consequently, an important task for the Park's design team was to look at ways of consolidating the Park as a homogenous unit, so when it came to crossing the Mile End Road a more ambitious alternative was sought.
The Green Bridge spans 5 lanes of the Mile End Road, with 25 metres width of landscaped parkland. Rainwater runs off the Bridge and down into tanks on either side. It is then pumped back onto it and recycled.
